In May, former MLB outfielder Chad Curtis was arrested and charged with five separate counts of criminal sexual conduct. On August 13th, the news came that an additional CSC charge was being added. All of the charges stem from investigations in to complaints about his behavior with Michigan female high school students where he volunteered as a strength trainer.
In early May, news reports revealed that Curtis was being investigated for allegedly touching the female students inappropriately. Curtis faced one count of criminal sexual conduct in the third-degree, two counts in the second-degree, and two counts in the fourth-degree. Lakewood High School is where the alleged inappropriate touching took place. Curtis was scheduled to take over as head football coach in the fall prior to being suspended by Lakewood. Curtis’ wife bailed him out of jail on 10% of a $250,000 bond.
During his career in MLB from 1992 to 2001, Curtis played for the Angels and the Yankees, as well as the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Indians.
Curtis has denied all charges of criminal wrongdoing, and will fight the new charge according to David Dodge Sr., Curtis’ defense lawyer. News reports allege that the inappropriate touching occurred while Curtis was administering therapeutic assistance for an injury, but that the therapy led to touching and kissing of intimate areas.
Michigan criminal sexual conduct defense lawyers know that the penalties for those convicted are harsh, often taking away the accused individual’s freedom and ruining his or her reputation and future. If convicted, you could face a minimum of 25 years in prison or even life behind bars, depending upon the degree of the offense. CSC is a felony offense; if convicted, you will also be required to register as a sex offender for a minimum of 25 years with the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry.
If you are being investigated or have been arrested for any offense which is sex-related, consult with a competent Michigan sex crimes defense attorney immediately.
