Grandville Volleyball Trainer Arrested in May Admits to Sex Crimes

Florencio Castillo, a Grandville volleyball trainer who was arrested in May on a total of six sex-related offenses, pleaded guilty on Monday September 10th to two of the counts. Castillo was accused of sexually assaulting juvenile female athletes while he was working at Impact Dynamics on 28th Street.

On May 2 of this year, Castillo was arrested on charges of third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct according to news reports. Castillo was allegedly training the juvenile girls in one-on-one sessions; at least two complaints involving sexual assault were filed with police. One alleged victim who was 15 years old at the time claimed that she pulled a thigh muscle while playing volleyball, and that Castillo offered to help with the strain. He asked the girl to remove her Spandex shorts, but she declined. She alleged that Castillo then began massaging her thigh, moving to the groin area and ultimately putting his hand inside her shorts before touching private areas.

Another alleged victim, a 14-year-old female, also came forward and told police that Castillo had put his hands down her pants and also lifted up her shirt while demonstrating some drills. Castillo did admit that he had touched the 14-year-old near her private areas, but did not acknowledge to police that he touched her the way she described.

In his plea agreement on Monday, Castillo admitted to one count of CSC in the fourth-degree along with one count of CSC in the third-degree. Fourth-degree sexual misconduct involves using force or coercion. Castillo is scheduled to be sentenced on October 4th; it is expected he will be sentenced to between 2 to 15 years in prison.

As Michigan sex crime attorneys, we realize that any time behind bars is tough. In some situations, those accused of sex-related crimes are victims of mistaken identity. However, even if you are guilty of the charges leveled against you, having to register as a sex offender for the rest of your life may be the most harsh penalty of all. Being labeled a sex offender affects your career, reputation, even your ability to buy a home in certain areas within close proximity to schools, daycares and churches.
