Registered Sex Offender in Kalamazoo Faces Federal Child Pornography Charges

Eric Walker, a 33-year-old registered sex offender from Kalamazoo, is now facing multiple charges and being held on multiple child pornography counts following a federal indictment filed in Grand Rapids recently. In the indictment Walker is charged with sexual exploitation of a child and distribution, possession and transportation of child pornography.

News reports say that Walker used his computer in February and March of 2009 and March of 2011 to distribute images of child pornography according to allegations made by authorities. Additionally, it is alleged that he persuaded a 15-year-old female to send sexually explicit photos of herself to Walker via text message on two occasions in April of this year.

Walker is listed on Michigan’s sex offender registry according to news reports for a conviction on charges of attempted third-degree CSC (criminal sexual conduct) in Bay City in April of 1997. He is scheduled to appear in federal court on September 19.

Walker’s stepmother, Christina Blakely, says that she has lived with Walker for years, and that he has turned his life around after putting the 1997 incident behind him. She claims that Walker is a good father, and was a business owner for several years. Blakely said that until officers raided her home earlier this year, there were no signs that anything illegal was being done by Walker.

The 15 page federal indictment claims that computer files containing child pornographic images were distributed in 2009 and 2011, although Blakely does not feel this finding indicates Walker’s guilt, as she says friends borrowed his computer on occasion.

Michigan sex crime lawyers know the seriousness of these types of charges; if convicted, the accused faces life-long stigma as a sex offender, not to mention substantial fines and possible prison time. According to the Michigan Penal Code (750.145c) penalties for distribution of child sexually abusive material include fines of up to $50,000 and up to 7 years in prison. These penalties may become even more severe depending upon the circumstances and other factors.
