Imprisoned Sex Offender Charged in 2007 Grand Rapids Slaying of 19-year-old

Alvon Davis, a 22-year-old imprisoned sex offender, now faces charges in a 2007 killing involving 19-year-old Russell Griffin. Davis, originally convicted on charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, has been imprisoned at the Ionia Maximum Corrections Facility.

According to news reports, Russell Griffin had gone on a fast-food run in the early morning hours of April 9, 2007 when he was shot as he was walking up to his residence at 1154 Cromwell. Davis fled the area and escaped apprehension; the case went cold.

The Kent Metro Cold Case Team was led to Davis at the corrections facility after developing new leads in the murder case. Davis is now charged with felonious use of a firearm, being a habitual offender and second-degree murder. Davis is currently being held in the Kent County jail awaiting his next court date after waiving his preliminary examination on October 30th.

Prison records showed that Davis is currently serving a sentence of one year and 7 months to 15 years in prison on the second-degree CSC charge.

Michigan sex crimes defense lawyers understand that the punishment often handed out to those convicted on charges of criminal sexual conduct are harsh, and that being labeled a sex offender negatively impacts all aspects of an individual’s life forever. However, being charged with second-degree murder will likely mean Davis now faces up to life in prison or any number of years if convicted, as the penalty ultimately rests in the hands of the court. Additionally, the criminal penalties for felonious use of a firearm can be extremely severe, and may include fines of up to $5,000 and an additional 5 years in prison.

Whether you have been charged with criminal sexual conduct, murder or homicide, or any criminal offense, you are likely facing serious prison time not to mention fines and a criminal record. Individuals who have been charged with serious and/or violent crimes require the experience, skill and aggressive approach of a seasoned Michigan criminal defense attorney.
