Ypsilanti Man Charged with Rape of Acquaintance Faces Preliminary Exam

Derrick King, a 54-year-old Ypsilanti man charged with breaking into an acquaintance’s home and then raping and physically assaulting her, faced a preliminary examination on Tuesday, March 26. According to Detective Sgt. Tom Eberts of the Ypsilanti Police Department, Eberts entered the home of the woman after midnight on February 3, using a key. News reports at AnnArbor.com state that Eberts had dated the woman and had lived at the residence located in the 700 block of Washtenaw Avenue in the past.

King was charged with one count each of first-degree home invasion, interfering with electronic communications, domestic violence, intimidating a witness, and two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct according to court records. Eberts said that King kept his victim in the home during the night, where he sexually and physically assaulted her. She attempted to call police, but King allegedly grabbed the phone from her and would not let her leave the home.

Prior to his preliminary exam, King was being held on a $50,000 cash or surety bond at the Washtenaw County Jail. King and the alleged victim had been in a relationship over a three-year time period; there had been previous issues with domestic abuse in the relationship according to Eberts.

King was in prison from August of 1993 until October of 2011, and has a long criminal history which includes a conviction for shoplifting in 1990, first-degree retail fraud in 1993, delivery/manufacture of a narcotic less than 50 grams in 1992, and other convictions for offenses related to firearm possession and armed robbery.

Michigan sex crimes lawyers know that if convicted on charges of first-degree CSC, King faces serious criminal penalties which could potentially include life in prison. In cases where the alleged victim knows the individual accused of committing the crime, there are many questions to be answered. Individuals are often falsely accused of these types of crimes by people they know.
