Detroit Police Officer Faces Criminal Sexual Conduct Charges in Connection with Incidents at Farmington Hills Home

Geoffrey Townsend, a Detroit police officer who once appeared on Fox 2 News in a segment focusing on Reality Check Detroit, his non-profit youth organization, now faces numerous charges of criminal sexual conduct related to incidents which allegedly occurred between October 2010 and August of last year at his Farmington Hills home.

Townsend, who is 43 years old, was arraigned recently in Farmington Hills District Court and may face up to 15 years in prison if convicted on the charges, according to a news report at the Oakland Press. Townsend’s Reality Check Detroit is a 12-week course which was designed to help keep young people ages 6 to 14 out of jail, and to help them in regards to self-esteem, social and behavioral skills, and academics. However, these efforts came to an end when Townsend was pulled over by Farmington Hills police on Tuesday evening, March 26.

The defendant is charged with four counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree, including one sexual assault charge. Townsend was arrested at the time he was pulled over, as officers had already secured a signed arrest warrant. One parent of a child who was involved in the youth program made startling accusations against Townsend, one of which included penetration of a minor between the ages of 13 and 15. According to police, the charges against Townsend are related to a girl who the defendant met through his youth program; she was reported to be 13 years old at the time of the alleged incident.

Prosecutor Jessica Cooper stated in the news report that, “We are all concerned that there may be additional victims out there.”

Townsend became a Detroit police officer in 2000. As of the most recent news reports, he was being held on $25,000 bond at the Oakland County Jail.

Michigan sex crime attorneys know that while the allegations against Townsend may be true, he is innocent until proven guilty. In situations such as Townsend’s where there are youth involved, it is easy for false accusations to be made, which can unfortunately ruin an individual’s reputation and career for life. Hopefully we will learn more in the coming weeks.
