James Alfred Beckman Jr., a Mattawan resident, was recently indicted by a grand jury on felony charges of receiving child pornography and sexually exploiting a child, according to a news article at Mlive.com. On Thursday August 15, Beckman was taken into custody by federal marshals.
A 10-page indictment filed in Grand Rapids U.S. District Court on August 13 states the defendant is charged with one count each of receipt of child pornography and attempted coercion and enticement of a child, two counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child, and three counts of sexual exploitation of a child and attempted sexual exploitation of a child.
Federal investigators claim that Beckman attempted to coerce a young boy into engaging in explicit sexual conduct for the purpose of making a live video of the sexual conduct between November of 2011 and September of 2012. Investigators also allege in the indictment that Beckman sent messages to an adult intermediary to try to entice someone believed to be a minor female to engage in sexual conduct via Yahoo! Messenger.
Part of Project Safe Childhood, the case was investigated jointly by Michigan State Police and the FBI.
Beckman is scheduled for arraignment, pretrial conference and a detention hearing in front of U.S. Magistrate Ellen S. Carmody on Wednesday August 21. If convicted, Beckman may be sentenced to life in prison.
