Sheriff’s Lt. Randy Pfau said the victim claims that the sexual abuse started when she was about 8 years old, and that it continued until recently. Polzin was initially charged by prosecutors with a single count of first-degree CSC. He was held without bond following his December 23 arraignment before Saginaw County District Judge Terry L. Clark.

Investigators continued pursuing leads and developing evidence while Polzin remained in jail. As additional evidence surfaced, Polzin was charged by prosecutors with singe counts of possessing child sexually abusive material and extortion, along with 15 additional counts of first-degree CSC. Polzin was arraigned on the new charges on December 27. Polzin was charged with extortion after he allegedly threatened to injure the victim’s property and/or her mother.

Polzin remains in the Saginaw County Jail and is scheduled to go before District Judge M.T. Thompson for a preliminary hearing on January 3.

Extortion is an extremely serious charge which leaves the accused facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted; however, first-degree criminal sexual conduct is even more serious. Defendant’s found guilty of this offense face a maximum penalty of life in prison. First-degree CSC involves penetration, and is the most serious sex crime of all. In many cases, prosecutors offer plea agreements to defendants which if the defendant agrees, may result in reduced penalties.

Whether a defendant should accept a plea offer or proceed forward to trial is a decision best made by the accused and his/her Michigan sex crime defense attorney. A skilled, capable lawyer with extensive experience in these types of cases can mean the difference between spending years or even life behind bars, and freedom.
