On December 5, 32-year-old Nathan Lavoie of Middleville was arrested for the alleged sexual abuse of a teenage girl who was 15 years old when the abuse began in 2011. According to news articles at Mlive.com, Lavoie was accused of abusing the girl from 2011 to 2013. Authorities believe he committed numerous sexual acts against the girl; he faced charges including accosting a minor and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Lavoie, who was a choir director at St. Therese Lisieux Parish in Wayland, now faces new charges which were filed on December 11. Prosecutors in Allegan County have filed two counts of fourth-degree CSC against Lavoie, although the details surrounding the new charges have not been revealed. News reports indicate only that the new charges are in connection with an incident which occurred around the first of November in 2012.
Police were still investigating earlier this month to determine if there may be other victims. Lavoie was placed on administrative leave from the parish in March of this year by Rev. Christian Johnston after Johnston was alerted to the potential misconduct.
Pending his probable cause hearing on December 27, Lavoie was ordered not to have contact with any females younger than 16; he posted a $25,000 bond. If found guilty of the original charges dating back to December 5, Lavoie may face fines of up to $100,000 and up to 20 years in prison. The most recent charges of fourth-degree CSC are punishable by up to two years in prison and potential fines.
