Co-owner of Chelsea Eatery Has Sexual Assault Case Bound Over to Circuit Court

Approximately two weeks ago, 37-year-old Michael Paul Radant was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Radant is a co-owner of Ellie’s Chelsea, a burger and sandwich shop in Chelsea’s Clocktower Commons. Radant’s case has now been bound over to circuit court following a preliminary examination according to his attorney, Brian Montoye.

News reports state that a 37-year-old woman came into the Chelsea Police Department to report that she had been sexually assaulted by Radant on November 15. According to Ed Toth, Chelsea police chief, Radant was not a stranger to the woman; they had bee acquaintances for some time. Although Toth would not go into great detail about the incident, he did say that third-degree CSC involves both force and penetration.

Radant’s mother, Judy, is also co-owner of the eatery. She said that the two knew each other, and that “there are a lot of issues that entered into this.”

The case was bound over to circuit court after Judge Richard Conlin determined that there was probable cause that a crime had occurred. Court records revealed that a pretrial hearing will be held in Judge David Swartz’s courtroom on January 10th.

The alleged victim told police that she was sexually assaulted by Radant at a home in the 700 block of North Main Street.

It is common for individuals to accuse those they know of sexual assault, rape, and other sex crimes; this may occur out of jealousy, rage or under any circumstances where an individual desires to “pay back” someone else when something goes wrong in a relationship. Sexual relations may be consensual at the time they occur, then one of the parties cries rape. While this isn’t necessarily the case in the above situation, it does happen, and can mean innocent people end up labeled as sex offenders, facing serious consequences.
