Former Counselor Enters Guilty Plea to Sex with Teen Boy

In August, we wrote about Jeffrey Victor Marchione, an Alto man who had been arrested for allegedly molesting a teenage boy and who had overdosed on prescription drugs in an effort to take his own life when authorities came to arrest him. On December 18, Marchione pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sexual conduct before Kent County Circuit Court Judge James Robert Redford, according to news reports at pills-450014-m.jpg

Marchione is a former Alto counselor who provided shelter for nearly 30 children in recent years. He allegedly engaged in sexual activity with the victim between January of 2011 and June of 2013 at his home.

Authorities were investigating Marchione for allegations of child pornography when they discovered the Wyoming victim, who told investigators Marchione had sexually abused him when he was between the ages of 13 and 16. He pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in November to child pornography possession.

Marchione wrote a guide on how to locate and molest children without anyone finding out; he also had amassed some 32,000 images of child pornography on the Internet, according to court documents.

In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed one charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Marchione remains jailed on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled for sentencing on March 17. He will be sentenced on the child pornography charges three days prior, and will serve both sentences concurrently according to the plea agreement. He will serve up to 15 years for the third-degree CSC charges.

It is really no surprise that the defendant in this case attempted to take his own life, considering his life and reputation are ruined. Committing a sex crime, particularly with a minor, is indeed shameful. However, the criminal penalties in Michigan for those convicted of sexual assault, rape, or other crimes are extremely harsh, and many innocent people do sit behind bars today for offenses they were wrongfully accused of. Even worse, many lives, careers, and reputations have been ruined.
