Hitchhiker Wanted for Sexual Assault Turns Himself In; Says He Didn’t Do It

In late July, a woman picked up a hitchhiker in Eveline Township; she was then allegedly sexually assaulted before the hitchhiker, a male, reportedly stole her truck and drove away. Now, two months later, the 22-year-old suspect has turned himself in to police – but says he didn’t do it.

The alleged victim told police that the man raped her and then drove away in her truck. The 37-year-old woman picked up the hitchhiker at around 1 a.m. on July 25th. After the woman called 911, authorities located the truck just a short distance away; it was abandoned. The victim was treated at a Charlevoix area hospital. According to news reports, police later located a second vehicle which was allegedly stolen by the suspect in Boyne City.

On Tuesday, September 25th, Cody Michael Mittig turned himself in to police but pleaded not guilty to criminal sexual conduct and unlawfully driving away. He was arraigned on two counts of unlawfully driving away, and three counts of CSC, which could potentially put him in prison for life if convicted.

At the time of the alleged attack, Charlevoix County Sheriff Don Schneider stated, “We understand people, with their best intentions, wanting to help others; however this is a prime example of what can go seriously wrong.”

After pleading not guilty to the charges, Mittig’s bond was set at $20,000.
