A female inmate has recently alleged that a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy engaged in criminal sexual conduct with her. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave; his name has not been released and will not be disclosed unless criminal charges are filed against him, or his job terminated.
Michigan State Police have made several attempts to arrange an interview with the deputy; a third interview attempt had been scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, August 13, although it is not known at this time whether the interview took place. The case will be forwarded to the prosecutor by detectives regardless of whether the interview attempt is successful, according to a news article at WWMT.com, Newschannel 3.
The female inmate who made the allegations against the deputy was transferred to another facility. If charges are filed, the deputy will face first-degree criminal sexual conduct because of his position of authority.
Michigan State Police are investigating the allegations, and are in the final stages of the weeks-long probe according to Detective 1st Lt. Chuck Christensen. Christensen would not reveal whether the alleged sexual conduct took place while the deputy was on the job. Pali Matyas, Kalamazoo County Undersheriff said only that the deputy is under investigation for “improprieties,” and would not release any further details regarding the accusations against the deputy.
Michigan sex crime attorneys know that allegations of first-degree criminal sexual conduct are extremely serious. If convicted, it is possible the defendant will face up to life in prison depending on the circumstances. False allegations are often made in cases of a sexual nature; unfortunately, many innocent people sit behind bars today serving time for crimes they did not commit.
Anyone who is accused of a sex offense regardless of how minor it may seem must discuss the situation with a qualified and aggressive Michigan sex crime lawyer. Even those less serious charges leave convicted individuals face serious criminal penalties which can negatively impact their freedom, reputation, and careers.
